If you've ever tackled a home renovation project, either by yourself or using a contractor or other hired professional, you've undoubtedly learned a thing or two about how these kinds of projects work.

I've tackled several renovation projects in the past, from installing sprinkler systems into a yard to gutting and rebuilding an entire kitchen. One that I could never forget was a do-it-yourself egress window project I tackled with a friend and my father-in-law. I had never moved that much dirt by hand before and I haven't since!

With that project, and with most of the others, I've learned a few common truths:

1. Projects are rarely, if ever, as easy or as straight-forward as they seem.
2. Projects generally take longer than you expect them to take.
3. Projects generally cost more than you initially expect them to cost.

Evidently, I'm not the only do-it-yourselfer who has ever experienced these truths, as freshome Design & Architecture Magazine has put together a list of '10 Things Not to Do When Remodeling Your Home.'

Included in their list are items that correlate to my three above, as well as reminders relating to safety both during and after the project, and the need for a strong visual of the project and having all the elements needed for the project before you get started.

If you're looking for ideas for, or someone to help with, your next home remodeling project, be sure to come down to the Rochester Home, Vacation & RV Show, being held March 13-15 in the Graham Arenas at the Olmsted County Fairgrounds.
