Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -Tuesday will be the first day of the new school year for most Minnesota children.

Students in the Rochester School District, and the Rochester Catholic Schools system will be returning to class for another nine plus months of studies.

The Rochester Public School District’s preliminary enrollment total is just under 17,400, which is about 250 above the official enrollment tally for the previous year. The district was projecting enrollment would rise slightly this fall to around 17,160 students. The head count for the 2015-2016 school year won’t be officially certified until October and the total will likely fluctuate a bit during the first few weeks of the school year.

Also kicking off a new year Tuesday is University of Minnesota-Rochester, which is expecting 25 fewer freshman students from a year ago. Official enrollment numbers are expected to be released later this month.
