Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Rochester City Council was briefed Monday on a long term plan to make some significant changes to the northern and southern ends of Broadway.

The city is considering a complete makeover of Broadway between 28th St on the south and 37th St on the north to make it more convenient and safer for motorists, transit users, pedestrians and bicyclists. Traffic lane and intersection modifications, along with designated bicycle lanes and landscaping are also included in the plan. The city took ownership of the stretch of roadway from MNDOT two years ago and was given $26 million for future maintenance expenses. The city will have to pay for any other improvements.

Staff is favoring a 15 year plan that would begin with a proposal to add a traffic control light at the Broadway/3rd Ave. SE intersection near the former Golden Hill school. Next up would be the reconstruction of Broadway between Civic Center Drive on the south and 14th St on the north.

The plan has an estimated cost of $87 million. It would be  included in the city’s Capital Improvement Program and completed in segments. It does not include the downtown section of Broadway or any needed right-of-way.The downtown section would be dealt with through the evolving DMC plan.
