MELROSE, Minn. (AP) — Police say the grandmother of a 2-day-old baby took a newborn girl from a hospital in the central Minnesota city of Melrose.

The St. Cloud Times reports that police quickly contacted the woman, and she returned the child to CentraCare Health-Melrose unharmed within an hour Friday.

Melrose Police Chief Craig Maus says there were no immediate arrests, and investigators were deciding whether to charge the grandmother.

He says the grandmother decided to take the girl from the hospital after the newborn's mother became aware that county child protection workers might get involved.

The hospital campus went into lockdown after the incident was reported as an abduction around 9 a.m.

Maus says he called the grandmother and persuaded her to return to the hospital with the girl.
