Whether it's a pair of ice-fishing grandpas or the late-great purple-one giving us the "Revolution," Minnesota has contributed to a lot of memorable films from Hollywood.

Movies these days are shot all over the world, with exotic locations to wow us on the big screen. But there's no mistaking it whenever a film is shot in our own backyard. Though the movies on this list like to poke fun at our Midwest stereotypes, they also do a good job showing off what our beautiful state has to offer.

Here they are, in no particular order.

    Grumpy Old Men (1993)

Why not start with an all-time classic? Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau star in this comedy about two aging Minnesota neighbors with a long history of animosity. The comedic duo feud over everything from ice fishing to the women next door. Many of the ice fishing scenes were filmed on Lake Rebecca in Rockford, and the hometown of the two is a fictionalized version of Wabasha. The town does, however, still host a Grumpy Old Men festival every February with ice fishing, cribbage, and a pet pageant!

    Fargo (1996)

First of all, no, we don't all talk like that. As much as the film may have popularized our beautiful accent, it's still one of the greatest movies to be filmed and set in Minnesota. This bloody comedy of embezzlement, murder, and dogged police work stars William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, and Frances McDormand. Native sons the Coen brothers used locations all over Minnesota in the making of the film.

    Purple Rain (1984)

Ladies and gentlemen... the Revolution! Purple Rain tells the love story of the Kid (Prince) and Apollonia (Apollonia Kotero), and takes place in the midst of a feud between Prince's "The Revolution" and Morris Day's "The Time." Most of the film was shot in Minneapolis, and the production shut down First Avenue for almost a month to film its incredible performance scenes. It also launched one of the most successful soundtracks of all time.

    Jingle All the Way (1996)

Jingle All the Way is a silly family holiday flick that follows mattress salesman Howard Langston (Schwarzenegger) as he attempts to make up for not paying enough attention to his son by getting him TurboMan, the hot new toy of the season. If that's not enough of a draw, where else are you going to see a 'fight' between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad inside the iconic Mickey's diner? They also filmed at the Mall of America, among other Minnesota spots, for this Christmas comedy.

    The Mighty Ducks (1992)

Up next is one of my favorite films of all time! The Mighty Ducks was filmed and produced entirely in Minnesota and is the classic underdog story. When big-shot defense attorney Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) is brought down on a DUI, a judge forces him to coach a hockey team of unorganized youth from Minneapolis. The team, who become the Mighty Ducks, compete for a championship against their arch rivals, the Hawks (a team hailing from, of all places, Edina). The scene shown HERE was even shot in Minneapolis's Elliot Park.

    Angus (1995)

Many of you reading this list might be thinking, "Wait, how'd this movie make this list?" Well, it has everything you could want from a high school underdog tale: A climactic dance/fight scene, a training montage, and snappy dialogue between kids and their parental figures.

Plus, the this hilarious 1995 movie was filmed in Stillwater and Owatonna. It also features Owatonna High School and its actual marching band. (Bet you didn't know that)! The movie follows Angus (Charlie Talbert), an unpopular kid who's good at science and fair at football, in his journey through his freshman year of high school. The movie also stars Ariana Richards, his crush and the prettiest girl in school, and evil jock James Van Der Beek (in his film debut). Side note: It's also possible that this comedy is the most '90s film of all time. Look no further than the trailer, which boasts music from the Goo Goo Dolls, Weezer, and Green Day... Just awesome!

    Mallrats (1995)

Filmed in Minnesota, down the road from Fargo, which was shooting at the same time. This is a story about two best friends (Jason Lee and Jeremy London) who seek refuge in the local mall after both being dumped by their girlfriends (Shannen Doherty and Claire Forlani). The flick, directed by Kevin Smith, shot the majority of the scenes in the Eden Prairie Center. The EPC worked out perfectly for the shooting as there were a lot of vacant storefronts, so the producers could set up "fake stores" for the film.
