Byron, MN (KROC AM News) - Imagine looking out your 2nd-floor apartment and seeing a ladder propped against the window.

That’s what happened to a Byron woman Wednesday night.

Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Scott Behrns says the 39-year-old woman heard a noise outside the window around 10:30 PM, spotted the ladder and called 911. A deputy found footprints but no sign of anyone and left. Behrns says the woman suspected a former boyfriend was involved.

Two hours later, she looked out her window and saw the ex-boyfriend near her apartment and called 911 again. Behrns says this time a deputy was able to track the footprints to a nearby residence and found the man in a garage. Arrested on a stalking charge was 33-year-old Jonathan Payton.

He was involved in a bizarre incident in 2017.

An ex-girlfriend found him hiding in a bedroom closet and he fled. What she didn’t know was that Payton returned and got into the trunk of her car. Later in the day as she was driving to Byron, the woman heard a noise. When she arrived and opened the trunk, Payton got out and briefly chased her. A deputy arrived as Payton was driving away with the woman’s car and followed the vehicle before breaking off the high-speed chase when they reached Rochester. Payton was later apprehended and sentenced to 5 years probation last year.

It’s not known if that woman is the one involved in this latest incident.
