That's the question on the cover of 'A Necessary Act,' and the inspiration for a local author!

One of my favorite things about summer? Reading outside! I'm a sucker for any good book, but I love love love thrillers. Gone Girl, anything by James Patterson or John Sanford, and I'm a happy girl. So, of course, I was excited to hear about a local author and all the accolades and great reviews his debut novel is getting.

Tony Wirt, of Rochester, released 'A Necessary Act,' a few months ago and it keeps making all sorts of 'Top Picks' lists and was just named 'Book of the Week' by Bookworks!

"This story is about a high school kid that started recognizing these characteristics in one of his classmates and tried to figure out what to do about it," Wirt said. "There are few things he tries, and not to give anything away, but I'm a fan of stories that involve bad decisions and consequences of bad decisions, so things don't go as planned. It's actually split into the high school years when he is doing this stuff and his adult years 20 years later, and the repercussions of his own actions back in high school. I wanted people to kind of have that moral question of 'What would you do?'"

Writing a novel has always been something Wirt intended to do, but the timing wasn't right until now. "I've always liked to write," he said. "Even when I was a kid, I liked to write little stories about random things. When I went to college, I studied journalism and wrote for the paper down there, stuff like that. In the back of my mind, I'd always thought I would love to write a book. I'm a big reader so I'd always wanted to do that on my own, but it's a big leap; it's a big process that's kind of intimidating."

'A Necessary Act' is available for purchase online and to check out from the Rochester Public Library. Want to learn more about Wirt? Check out his website.
