This arctic air that covered Minnesota this morning produced the state’s coldest temperature reading of the winter.

The National Weather Service says the mercury fell to 41 below zero in the tiny northeastern Minnesota town of Embarrass. Crane Lake and Orr reported lows of -36 and it dropped to 35 below zero in International Falls.Morning lows in the -20’s were common across the northern half of the state, while most areas of southern Minnesota saw the mercury bottom out in the single-digits to teens below zero.

The unofficial low at the Rochester Airport was 16 below zero, which was the city’s second coldest reading of the winter. The lowest it has been was -17, which occurred on February 5th and January 13th.

Forecasters are predicting highs in the 20’s on Friday and Saturday before another blast of arctic air arrives Sunday.
