Public safety officials have been dealing with traffic mishaps in the area as roads are being affected by the mixed precipitation that began falling early Tuesday morning.

As of 11 a.m., the National Weather Service had received snowfall reports of 1-3 inches across southeast Minnesota. A report of 3.2 inches came from Dover.

Temperatures are expected to climb above freezing Wednesday so the snow may not be around very long. Dry weather is expected Wednesday and Christmas Day with temps in the 30’s.

The wet weather apparently played a role in a deadly traffic wreck near Blooming Prairie Tuesday morning. The State Patrol says a car driven by 50 year old Mark Smith of Medford lost control on Highway 218 around 7 a.m. and the vehicle spun out and crossed the centerline. It was then hit broadside on the passenger side by a car driven 31 year old Alicia Westendorf of Austin.

Smith died at the scene. Westendorf suffered non-life threatening injuries.
