Steven Peterson, of Duluth, says he was driving home last Monday when he saw the deer struggling in the river and felt like he should do something.

Peterson, 50, told the Duluth News Tribune he was returning from a trip in Missouri for Christmas when he “noticed what looked like a rock bobbing up and down.”  He said he kept driving but kept thinking about it so he turned around and went back to investigate.  He found a deer that was struggling and nearly frozen.

Peterson told the Duluth News Tribune that he considered calling 9-1-1 “but being a deaf individual, I knew the struggle to communicate with the police would take too long. I knew if I tried my best, I might be able to save this animal."

The Duluth man says the deer is safe now and he hopes it might find its mother.
