Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - After a winter full of ice, snow and slick roads, we finally have some nice weather with dry roads. The problem is as the roads dry, driver speeds go up and so do fatalities.

You can expect statewide speed enforcement from July 6-22 on Minnesota roads to help remind Minnesotans to stay safe and not drive aggressively. Police Officers, sheriff’s deputies and troopers from more than 300 agencies statewide will be looking for speeders across Minnesota.

“Posted speed limits are not just a nice suggestion - they’re the law designed to keep drivers and everyone around them safe,” Sgt Jens Dammen said. “Driving aggressively and speeding gives you less room for error and can cause others to react in ways that endanger their lives. Remember that safe driving is a cooperative effort, and the selfish choice to speed can ruin the lives of so many.”

Preliminary numbers show that 88 people were killed in speed-related crashes in 2017, and during the 2017 100 deadliest days, preliminary numbers show speed-related crashes played a role in 23 fatalities.

Extra speed enforcement and education efforts are part of the state’s Toward Zero Deaths program.
