Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Rochester Police are questioning one person and seeking another in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred early today near St. Mary’s Hospital.

Police Captain John Sherwin says the incident was initially reported as a motor vehicle accident near the intersection of 2nd street and 14th avenue southwest at 2:23 a.m. A Gold Cross ambulance crew happened to be nearby and was the first to arrive at the scene. They found the driver, a 31-year-old Rochester man, was unresponsive. Two other males were in the car, and one of them fled the scene on foot.

The driver was then transported to St. Mary’s Hospital, where it was discovered he had been shot in the torso and efforts to save his life were not successful.

Captain Sherwin says investigators have determined the fatal shooting occurred inside the vehicle, but the circumstances remain under investigation. He also says a handgun was found near the crime scene. Sherwin says the person brought in for questioning has not been too helpful, and investigators have not yet learned the identity of the person who fled the scene after the ambulance crew arrived.

The name of the victim and other details are expected to be released later today.
