Flu-Related Complications Blamed for Child’s Death
St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) -- Minnesota has seen the season’s first flu-related death involving a child.
The state health department’s weekly influenza update indicates officials received a report during the past week of a pediatric flu-related death. The age and location of the child were not disclosed.
During the previous flu season, there were 10 pediatric flu-related deaths in the state.
Overall flu activity in Minnesota remains classified as “widespread” with increases noted in the number of probable school outbreaks and confirmed outbreaks in long-term care facilities. There were 42 schools that reported high absenteeism involving students with flu-like symptoms and 5 flu outbreaks were confirmed in nursing homes throughout the state.
The other indicators in the report showed declines in activity. There were about 20 fewer flu-related hospitalizations reported and there was a drop in the percentage of people seeking medical care that present with flu-like symptoms.
