‘Frightening’ Results from DUI Crackdown

St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Public safety officials in Minnesota are describing the results of a recent statewide crackdown on drunk driving as “not only disturbing, but frightening.”

The State Department of Public Safety says there were just over 2500 arrests made during the enhanced enforcement campaign that began with the Thanksgiving holiday and ran through the New Year’s holiday. Over 300 local law enforcement agencies and the State Patrol participated in the crackdown.

Troopers in the State Patrol’s Rochester District reported 62 DUI arrests, the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Department reported 16, while Rochester police officers made only 2 drunk driving arrests while conducting extra patrols as part of the program.

The highest blood-alcohol-concentration found among those arrested in Olmsted County was .24, which is 3 times the legal limit and involved a motorist who was arrested for a third DWI in 3 weeks. Statewide, the highest BAC reading was .40 in a person arrested by a Minnetonka police officer.
