Rochester, MN  (KROC AM News) - Rochester police officers found themselves dealing with a cold case early Saturday.

Officers were sent to the downtown 2nd Street ramp around 2 a.m. to break up a fight involving two groups of people. They ended up handcuffing one of the men, identified by police as a 23 year old from Racine. But as the officers were dealing with the others, the man suddenly jumped over a ledge in the ramp, ran to the nearby Zumbro River and went into the cold water.

The officers initially were not aware the man was in the river until they heard some geese making a loud noise. The man tried to hide by putting his head under the surface of the shallow water but he was spotted and eventually came out. By then, he was nearly hypothermic.

He was taken to the police department’s vehicle garage where his clothes were cut off and he was kept warm until an ambulance arrived and took him to St. Mary’s. Before he left, he was given a ticket for disorderly conduct.

Temperatures at the time of the incident were in the single digits.
