Close to 40% of Americans aren't able to pay of their full balance every month which leads to hundreds if not thousands of dollars in interest charges each year.

Sean McQuay, a credit card expert with NerdWallet, says that people should stop treating their card like real money: “Just because your credit card says you can borrow $10,000, that doesn’t mean it’s really money in your pocket.”

So how much credit card debt does the average Minnesotan have and how long would it take to pay it off?

$5,565

If you paid $100 a month, it would take over 9 years.

Ouch!
