Rochester’s taxi cab fares will likely increase next year.

A task force that looked at rates and other cab-related issues presented its findings and recommendations to the City Council today.

The last rate increase was in 2005. The task force recommends the minimum fare be increased from the current $3.75 to $5 next year. The per mile cost would rise from $2.25 to $3.39 and the wait time would increase by 16 cents per minute.

The group recommends future increases be based on inflation. The group also recommends the establishment of a new set fee between the airport and downtown.

Also being recommended is a new permit for all drivers, who would have to complete a required course and meet other conditions. There are also recommended changes to the city’s existing taxi cab franchise ordinance.

The council is expected to hold a public hearing on the recommendations in the near future. A decision on the rate changes may come before the end of the year.
