Homeless Camps on City Council Agenda

The Rochester City Council recently cracked down on panhandlers in the city. Now, staff is recommending going after homeless people who live in city-owned woods and other property. This would include flood control lands, stormwater facilities and RPU property.

The City Attorney’s office is suggesting the council approve a policy that would give police officers and other city employees authority to deal with people caught camping or living on city property without a permit or prior approval. So-called homeless camps have been found on city property in recent years that included temporary shelters and tents. Under the policy, if a person refused to leave, police could issue a trespassing citation.

The Council is scheduled to vote on the request Monday night.
