Do you suffer from what is commonly called the "winter blues"?

There's a reason that people struggle: Brian Thompson, PhD, a Portland-based clinical psychologist, told lifehacker.com: circadian rhythms may be the culprit in seasonal mood swings.  Our circadian rhythm is triggered by daylight. This trigger tells us to be up and active. The lack of sunlight makes us lethargic. Our bodies are programmed to sleep when it's dark.

So how can you power through the winter months ahead?

There are some simple ways to improve your mood like exercise. Greg Chertok from the American College of Sports Medicine says, "Exercise provides an effective natural boost to both mood and health. Studies support the effectiveness of regular exercise as a way to manage mental stress, cognitive performance and energy."

Researchers say getting a little sunshine throughout the day will also help. Make it a point to get out of the office for a short walk each day. John Denver wasn't lying when he said sunshine makes him high. Healthline.com says "exposure to sunlight is thought to increase the brain’s release of a hormone called serotonin. This is associated with boosting mood and helping a person feel calm and focused."

Hopefully these simple tips can help you offset the "winter blues."
