Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - While it could be years before a restored and renovated Chateau Theater in downtown Rochester will likely be ready to serve the community as a multi-use venue, there is a chance it could be utilized on an interim basis for smaller performances and other events by the end of this year.

The Destination Medical Center Corporation Board is scheduled to consider a request Thursday to fund repairs and upgrades to the 100-year-old building to allow for the limited uses while the city waits for the completion of long-range plans for the future of the city-owned property. The proposal authorizes the use of up to $1 million in DMC funding to work up designs and perform the actual work on the building to enable its interim use.

The scope of the work could include repairs to the roof and windows, removing the escalator and plumbing upgrades. It should be noted the plans do not cover wheelchair or other ADA accessibility upgrades and the building’s small and antiquated restrooms would remain intact, waiting for a much larger and costly renovation and restoration project. The DMCC Board meeting documentation indicates the work would allow the Chateau to be used for music and entertainment; public speakers, education programs, video presentations; and breakfast, lunch, and dinner events with a maximum capacity of 390 people.

If the DMC Board approves, the plan would be sent to the Rochester City Council for consideration.
