Is This the End of Comedy in Rochester?
If you haven't heard yet, McGoon's Pub and Restaurant and Goonie's Comedy Club are closing. McGoon's already ceased its restaurant activities this past weekend.
The Comedy Club is closing this-coming weekend, with its last shows on July 8th and 9th. On the 7th, they will be hosting a free show, where local and touring comedians will be roasting the long-time host John Russell.
This past weekend I wanted to try McGoon's food for what would be only my second time, so I went on a date with my girlfriend and she had her first experience with their food. While we were looking at the menus, our server came up to us with a list of what they were all out of, which was almost half the menu! Thankfully, I wasn't picky and I was able to settle on their BBQ Cheddar Burger and some cheese curds. I have to be honest, my favorite thing was the cheese curds. In fact, I can easily say that they were the best cheese curds I have had in years!
I took the time to ask our server what might be in store for the restaurant's future. Would they try to reopen in a different location, or if they would be gone for good? Our server's answer was that, while the restaurant will not be reopening in a new location, the comedy club is searching for a new location where they hope to be open on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday basis. So, might we see Goonie's reopen in a different format in the near future. Who knows? Hopefully! But in the meantime, we all wish them luck in their future endeavors!
