09/08/2008 - COENS START FILMING NEW FLIK TODAY

Oscar award-winning filmmakers and Minnesota natives Joel and Ethan Coen are returning to the Twin Cities to shoot their new movie, "A Serious Man." The new $20-million flick is a dark comedy very loosely based on an autobiographical script written by the brothers. It will be set in their hometown of St. Louis Park, circa 1967. The first scene is scheduled to be shot today at Keys Cafe in Roseville.
 
09/08/2008 - TRAIN STOPS OVER MAN IN SAUK RAPIDS

A Sauk Rapids man survived an incident he won't forget for some time. Police say the man was laying between some railroad tracks Saturday when a train drove right over him. The train was travelling at a slow rate of speed and the locomotive came to a stop right over the man. Rescue workers say he was conscious and talking to them as they removed him from under the train. He was taken to a hospital and so far, has only told police he was walking home at the time.
 
09/08/2008 - MAN FATALLY SHOT IN LITTLE CANADA

Police in the Twin Cities suburb of Little Canada are investigating a weekend homicide. Officers found a man believed to be in his 20's on the ground behind an apartment building around 4 a.m. yesterday after residents called to report hearing shots fired. The man died on the way to the hospital. As of last night, no arrests had been made.
 
09/08/2008 - MORE ROCH WW II VETS HEADING TO WASHINGTON

A recent fundraising event held at Rochester's Shorewood Senior Campus to benefit World War 2 veterans was very successful - and it isn't quite over yet. The August 19th event raised just over $34,000. This Wednesday, the owner of Shorewood will turn over a matching check, adding another $34,000 to help cover the cost of an upcoming Honor Flight. The Honor Flight program will send 250 vets to Washington, D.C. on October 8th, allowing them to personally visit the World War 2 memorial. The success of the Shorewood event also means plans can be made for another flight next April.
 
09/08/2008 - MN AIR UNIT HEADING TO IRAQ

The Minnesota-based 934th Airlift Wing will head to Iraq this week. Governor Pawlenty will speak at a deployment ceremony this morning ( 8 am )for the "Flying Vikings" at the Minneapolis-St.Paul Air Reserve Station. The 934th is Minnesota's only Air Force Reserve Command flying unit. The wing is equipped with C-130 Hercules cargo aircraft which support re-supply missions and carry out other duties.

A taste of fall will be in the air tonight as meteorologists say temps could drop into the 30's across much of the state. A clear night means possible frost in northern Minnesota and a threat of it in central and southern sections. Numerous cities in central and northern areas are reporting temps in the 30's morning.

There are less than 60 days to go until the general election, but before that day comes, Minnesotans will be voting in the state's primary election tomorrow. Voters will decide hundreds of primary races involving local, judicial, county and state offices. The winners move on to the November 4th election. Most polling places will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.
 
09/08/2008 - WILL THE CHARGES STICK?

Prosecutors in St. Paul are reviewing all of the cases of journalists who were arrested during last week's Republican National Convention. More than 50,000 petitions were delivered to Mayor Chris Coleman's office last Friday demanding the city immediately drop all charges against the reporters. City Attorney John Choi says a decision on the media cases and others will be made by late this week. A number of journalists were sprayed with pepper spray and tear gas and many claim police prevented them from operating freely in St. Paul.
 
09/07/2008 - WATERVILLE MAN KILLED IN RICE COUNTY WRECK

A Waterville man is dead after a one-vehicle crash in Rice County late Friday. The State Patrol says a car driven by 60-year-old Charles Zimbrich lost control on Highway 60 and rolled. He was transported to a Twin Cities hospital where he died. Troopers say Zimbrich was not wearing a seatbelt.
 
09/07/2008 - NEW 35W BRIDGE MAY BE FINISHED IN 2 WEEKS

Contractors hope to complete the new 35W bridge in Minneapolis within the next two weeks. The project manager for Flatiron-Manson told reporters the new span over the Mississippi River could open in as little as ten days. The deadline for the project is December 24th and the contractor will be getting a large bonus for finishing ahead of schedule. MNDOT says completion of the new bridge doesn't necessarily mean it will open right away.

09/06/2008 - DEEPENING DROUGHT

Despite rain that fell across parts of southeastern Minnesota the last several days, the National Weather Service says the unusually dry weather that began in mid-June is still with us. The Weather Service says rainfall deficits in this part of the state since mid-June are in the 4 to 6-inch range and the lack of moisture is affecting grass and farm crops such as corn and soybeans. The Weather Service says moderate drought conditions now exist in Dodge County and in parts of Fillmore, Mower, Olmsted, Wabasha and Winona counties. The rainfall total at the Rochester Airport from June 15th through September 2nd is 5.6-inches, about 5.8-inches below normal.
 
09/06/2008 - GUNSHOT REPORTS IN KUTZKY NEIGHBORHOOD

Several residents in the Kutzky Park neighborhood called 911 around 3 this morning to report hearing several gunshots. The calls came from homes located from the 800 to 1000 blocks of 1st and 2nd streets northwest. A spokesman says officers did not find any shell casings or signs of damage. Anyone who does find casings or damage this morning is asked to contact the Police Department.
 
09/05/2008 - FIVE MEN ARRESTED FOR SHOOTING IN NORTHEAST ROCHESTER

Rochester Police say the five men detained after a shooting early today in a northeast Rochester neighborhood have been placed under arrest. Captain Brian Winters says 25-year-old Quantez Taylor, 31-year-old Robert Richardson, 19-year-old Ishmael Ewing, and 25-year-old Antuan Williams are being held on felony driveby shooting and gross misdemeanor terroristic threats charges. Ewing is from Red Wing, while the other three have Rochester addresses. The fifth man, 26-year-old Edward Clark of Rochester, is being held for a probation violation. Captain Winters says the men were in a car that was stopped by officers just moments after residents in the area near the 500 block of 11th avenue northeast reported hearing gunshots around 2:30am. Two handguns were found in the car. The officers had been patrolling in the neighborhood and were able to get to the crime scene very quickly. The shooting occurred in the same area where two shootings were reported last month. No one has been injured by the gunfire, but there has been some property damage.
 
09/05/2008 - TWO MEN CHARGED WITH POSSESSING MOLOTOV COCKTAILS

Federal prosecutors in the Twin Cities have filed charges against two men from Austin, Texas after they were caught some with some homemade gas bombs this week in Saint Paul. 22-year-old David McKay and 23-year-old Bradley Crowder are accused of possessing 8 molotov cocktails that were found in a Saint Paul apartment in the vicinity of the Xcel Energy Center. Investigators say the men belong to a group that had plans for disrupting the Republican National Convention and their are indications they may have intended to firebomb some police cars.
