SCOOP ON SPORTS MORNING 09/08/08

Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez and Dusty Ryan all hit homeruns as the Detroit Tigers held off the Twins 7-5 yesterday to take two-out-of-three from Minnesota at the Metrodome and leave the Twins two-and-a-half games behind first-place Chicago in the American League Central Division. Justin Morneau had four RBI’s, including a two-run triple, for the Twins, and Denard Span had a pair of hits, but the Twins were just 4-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 17 runners stranded over the final two games of the series. Glen Perkins allowed nine hits and three earned runs in five-and-two-thirds innings, and the Twins’ bullpen allowed an earned run in three-and-a-third, lowering its ERA to 6.16 in the last 15 games. Chris Lambert gave up three earned runs over five innings to get the win, and Fernando Rodney tossed a scoreless ninth to notch his 10th save for Detroit. The Twins won their season series with the Tigers, 11-7, and yesterday’s crowd of 31-thousand-236 pushed Minnesota over the two million mark in home attendance for a franchise-best fourth straight season.

Chicago lost to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and Cleveland topped Kansas City, in other American League baseball Sunday. Joe Saunders scattered four hits and struck out four in seven-and-a-third innings to win his first game in over a month as the Angels edged the Whitesox 3-2, and Cliff Lee struck out five and gave up seven hits in seven-a-third innings to win his tenth straight decision and 21st of the season as the Indians beat the Royals 3-1.

The Twins have a night off tonight, and will open a three-game series at home against the Kansas City Royals tomorrow. Minnesota has lost five of its last six games and trails Chicago by two-and-a-half games in the Central Division, and the Twins are now six-and-a-half games behind Boston in the American League wildcard chase with just 19 games left in the season. Chicago, Cleveland and Detroit, meanwhile, will all play tonight. The Whitesox open a series at home against Toronto, the Indians are in Baltimore to face the Orioles, and the Tigers host the Oakland Athletics.

The Twins’ series loss to the Detroit Tigers over the weekend was their first at home since early June against Baltimore, snapping a streak of 11 straight home series wins, and the back-to-back losses were the first at home for Minnesota since May 30th and 31st, when the Twins lost two-in-a-row at the Metrodome against the New York Yankees. In other Twins’ notes, starting pitcher Glen Perkins, who is tied for the league lead by rookies with 12 wins, failed to go six-plus innings for his second straight start, Brian Buscher leads Major League Baseball in fewest at-bats per RBI with an RBI each 4.3 at-bats, and Justin Morneau’s 117 RBI’s is second-best in the American League and ties his career-best mark, set in two-thousand-five.

The Detroit Tigers say Nate Robertson will replace Kenny Rogers in the starting rotation tomorrow against Oakland as Rogers continues to cope with a sore hip. Elsewhere in baseball, Cleveland Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner is expected to be activated off the disabled list tomorrow, Pittsburgh center fielder Nate McLouth needed six stitches after he was struck near his left eye by a batted ball, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have recalled right-handed pitcher Kevin Jepsen, Seattle catcher Jeff Clement will have arthroscopic knee surgery tomorrow that will keep him out for the rest of his rookie season, Boston has recalled right-handed pitcher Devern Hansack and activated pitcher Bartolo Colon from the 60-day disabled list and optioned him to Class Triple-A Pawtucket, the Philadelphia Phillies have designated left-handed pitcher R.J. Swindle for assignment, San Diego has purchased the contracts of pitcher Mike Estrom and infielder Drew Macias, the Washington Nationals have recalled first baseman Dmitri Young, Houston Astros right-hander Brandon Backe will miss his scheduled start tonight against the Pittsburgh Pirates because of soreness and tenderness in his forearm near his elbow, and Major League Baseball has suspended Houston minor league pitcher Runelvys Hernandez for 50 games for testing positive under baseball’s minor league drug program.

The Green Bay Packers officially begin life without Brett Favre [Farv] as they host the NFC North-rival Minnesota Vikings in their season-opener at Lambeau Field tonight. After much off-season drama over the retirement and then reinstatement of their longtime quarterback, the Packers eventually traded Favre to the New York Jets, handing the reigns over the Aaron Rodgers, and the fourth-year signal-caller will be heavily scrutinized this year after Favre led the Packers to within one game of the Super Bowl a season ago. The Vikings enter two-thousand-eight with high hopes as well despite a shaky two-thousand-seven campaign from quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, who threw only nine touchdown passes in 12 games, while tossing 12 picks. Minnesota will again rely heavily on running back Adrian Peterson, who racked up more than 13-hundred yards rushing and 12 touchdowns despite missing two games with a knee injury last season. Green Bay won both games against the Vikings last year by a combined score of 57-16. Vikings’ left tackle Bryant McKinnie won’t play tonight as he begins serving a four-game suspension violating the N-F-L's conduct policy.

Chicago won, and Detroit lost, as the N-F-L regular season got underway in earnest with 13 games Sunday. Matt Forte [for-TAY] had a 50-yard touchdown run and Lance Briggs returned a fumble 21 yards for a score as the Bears stunned the Colts 29-13 in Indianapolis, and Michael Turner rolled up 220 yards, a single-game team rushing record, as Atlanta outscored the Lions 34-21.

The Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders also open their N-F-L seasons tonight, with the Raiders playing at home, and the winner tonight will be alone in first place in the AFC West, after the Chargers and Chiefs both lost yesterday. Denver has ten rookies on its 53-man roster, including starters Ryan Clady at left tackle, Peyton Hillis at fullback, and Eddie Royal at receiver, and veteran wide receiver Brandon Marshall will miss the game, sitting out a one-game suspension for getting into legal trouble off the field.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady could be lost for the season after he reportedly suffered ligament damage to his left knee yesterday during the first quarter of the game against Kansas City. Brady did not return to action and is said to be in considerable pain, and will undergo an MRI today. Also in football, Tennessee quarterback Vince Young suffered a sprained left knee in Sunday’s win over Jacksonville, Dallas running back Marion Barber was treated for bruised ribs in the locker room during the second half of yesterday’s win over Cleveland, Seattle wide receiver Nate Burleson limped off the field midway through the third quarter after hurting his left knee against Buffalo, Kansas City quarterback Brodie Coyle left Sunday’s game against New England in the third quarter with a bruised left shoulder, Indianapolis tight end Dallas Clark suffered a right knee injury in the Colts’ loss to the Chicago Bears, the Denver Broncos have signed linebacker D.J. Williams to a five-year contract extension worth 32-million dollars, Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth suffered a pulled groin muscle during pregame warmups on Sunday and was unable to play against the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans has waived center Matt Lehr and signed linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar from the practice squad, San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith could find out today whether his latest shoulder injury will end his season, Buffalo Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters has passed his physical and will begin practicing with the Bills this week, and Cincinnati Bengals wide out Chad Ocho Cinco will have to wait at least another week to have his new surname on the back of his jersey as N-F-L officials look at "certain issues" before the change will be allowed. "Johnson" appeared on the back of his jersey yesterday, and he was referred to as such on the official play-by-play sheet.

The Minnesota Gophers say running back Duane Bennett underwent an MRI yesterday on his left knee, which he injured while catching a screen pass in the third quarter of Saturday night’s nonconference win at Bowling Green. Gopher coach Tim Brewster met with team trainers yesterday, but declined to disclose the seriousness of the injury. Bennett has rushed for 140 yards and one touchdown, and caught passes for 100 yards and a score, in the Gophers’ first two games, and if he can’t play this week against Montana, Minnesota is expected to go with either Shady Salamon, a freshman who rushed for 64 yards on a dozen carries Saturday, or Deleon Eskridge at starting tailback. In other Gopher notes, junior right guard Ned Tavale and junior center Jeff Tow-Arnett both left Saturday’s game in the second half with leg injuries.

Penn State defensive end Jerome Hayes will miss the rest of the college football season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Saturday’s win over Oregon State. Hayes was hurt while covering a punt return in the fourth quarter, and the start against Oregon State was the first in the junior’s career for the 17th ranked Nittany Lions. He suffered the same injury to his right knee last season, and is scheduled to undergo surgery in the next couple of weeks, with nine months of rehabilitation to follow.

Southern Cal and Georgia are still ranked one-two in the nation, according to this week’s Associated Press Division One college football poll. Oklahoma, Florida and Ohio State fill in this week’s top-five, with the Buckeyes slipping from third to fifth, and Wisconsin enters the top-ten for the first time this season, at number-ten. Penn State is ranked 17th in this week’s poll, while Illinois continues to hold down the number-24 spot.

The Minnesota Thunder battled the Vancouver Whitecaps to a scoreless overtime draw last night, earning one more point as they continue to fight for a playoff spot in the United Soccer League First Division. Nic Platter finished with five saves in goal for the Thunder, which went 1-1-1 against the Whitecaps this season, and Minnesota is now 8-11-9 and in seventh-place in the league standings with 33 points, two fewer than sixth-place Montreal and one more than 8th-place Atlanta. The Thunder returns to Blaine for its second-to-last game of the season on Saturday night against fifth-place Charleston.

The Gopher women’s soccer team won its sixth straight match to start the season for the first time in program history and captured the Regina Moench Memorial Tournament title with a three-nil win over Creighton Sunday in Minneapolis. Tamara Strahota, Lindsey Schwartz and Jennie Clark all scored for the Gophers yesterday, and Lindsey Dare recorded her fifth shutout in six games in goal this season. Her 13 career shutouts move her into fourth place on the Gophers’ all-time list, just one short of passing Julie Eibensteiner for third. Northeastern blanked Ohio University two-nil in Sunday’s other match in the tournament, with junior Liza Rebello scoring both goals, and the Gophers and Northeastern each finished 2-0 in the tournament, with Minnesota claiming the championship with a plus-five goal differential. Schwartz was named the Offensive M-V-P of the tournament, and Clark won the Defensive M-V-P award. The Gophers will travel to Reno, Nevada next weekend to play Nevada and Idaho.

RCTC plays host to Carleton this afternoon in a nonconference women’s community college soccer match. The Yellowjackets are unbeaten in three matches this season, and have yet to allow a goal, outscoring their opponents 31-0.

Mayo is at home, while Century and Lourdes both go on the road, tonight in boy’s high school soccer. The Spartans have won four-of-five to start the season and will host Albert Lea in Big Nine Conference action, the Panthers take their 5-2 record, and a 1-0 league mark, to Mankato West, which is ranked third in the state in Class ‘A’, and the fifth-ranked Eagles are 6-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the Hiawatha Valley League as they play at Lake City.

Century and Lourdes play at home, and Mayo’s on the road, tonight in girl’s high school soccer. The Panthers are unbeaten in four matches and ranked ninth in the state in Class Double-A as they entertain Mankato West in a Big Nine Conference match, the Eagles are 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the H-V-L as they host Caledonia at the Fuad Mansour Complex, and the Spartans take their 5-2 record, and a 2-0 mark in the Big Nine, to Albert Lea for a match against the Tigers.

Nicole Powell scored 22 points, Kara Lawson added 17, and Crystal Kelly scored ten, as the Sacramento Monarchs defeated the Minnesota Lynx 78-71 last night in W-N-B-A basketball, sending the Lynx to their fourth straight loss since the Olympic break. Charde Houston led four Lynx’ players in double figures with 19 points, but Minnesota was unable to erase a seven-point first-quarter deficit and fell into a tie for last-place with Houston in the Western Conference, three games behind the fourth-place Monarchs in the battle for the final playoff berth in the conference. Seimone Augustus scored 14 points, Candice Wiggins had 13 and Nicky Anosike finished with ten for the Lynx. Minnesota, now 14-17 for the season, will open a two-game homestand tomorrow night at Target Center against Indiana.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed Lorenzen Wright to a one year contract that will reportedly pay him 1.2-million-dollars. The 6-11, 255 pound Wright played for Memphis from two-thousand-one through two-thousand-six, spent last year with Atlanta, and is entering his 13th N-B-A season.

Two Minnesota high school senior basketball players being recruited by Tubby Smith and the Gophers have decided they’ll go elsewhere next season. 6-9 forward Sam Dower of Osseo has informed UofM officials that he’s committed to Gonzaga, and 6-7 Hopkins forward Mike Broghammer has verbally committed to Notre Dame. The Gophers reportedly also lost another potential recruit when 7-foot center Trevor Williams of Colorado committed to Colorado State after a weekend visit to the school.

Legendary college basketball coach Don Haskins passed away Sunday afternoon at the age of 78. Haskins helped revolutionize college basketball while he was head coach at Texas Western, leading a team of all black players to the 1966 NCAA Championship over an all-white Kentucky team, and the run was later turned into the film "Glory Road." Haskins spent 38 seasons at Texas Western, which is now known as UTEP, becoming one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history with a 719-354 record, and he was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall Of Fame in 1997.

Century, Mayo and Lourdes are all at home tonight in girl’s high school volleyball. The Panthers are 5-3 as they host Red Wing, the Spartans remain unbeaten through four matches as they take the court at home against Woodbury, which is ranked fifth in the state in Class Three-A, and the Eagles are 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Hiawatha Valley League as they host Cannon Falls at Alumni Hall.

Minnesota Wild defenseman Brett Burns is recovering after having surgery on his left elbow. Team General Manager Doug Reisbrough says that Wild medical staff successfully performed the operation, and that Burns is expected to return to action in about four weeks.

Camilo Villegas [vee-YAY-giss] held off the field to collect his first PGA Tour victory at the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club Sunday, closing with a two-under-par 68 to finish the tournament 15-under-par and move into second place in the FedEx Cup playoff standings. Dudley Hart shot a five-under 65 to finish second at minus-13, and Jim Furyk [FURE-ick] and Anthony Kim tied for third at 12-under-par. Also in golf, Annika Sorenstam ended her pro career in Europe by finishing third behind Martina Eberl and Melissa Reid at the Nykredit Masters, Richard Berkmeyer earned the top match-play spot in the Mid-Amateur in River Hills, Wisconsin, and Wendi Patterson-Golden shot a two-under-par 70 to top the 64 match-play qualifiers in the Women’s Mid-Amateur in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Serena Williams defeated second-seeded Jelena Jankovic [YANK-oh-vitch] 6-4, 7-5 to win the women's title at the U.S. Open last night. The fourth-seeded American captured her third U.S. crown overall and ninth career major championship, adding the win to previous titles at Flushing Meadows in 1999 and two-thousand-two. Earlier in the day, sixth-seeded Andy Murray advanced to his first major final with the completion of Saturday's rain-interrupted semifinal against top-seeded Rafael Nadal [na-DOLL], and he’ll play four-time defending champion Roger Federer in tonight’s men's final.

Century plays host to Red Wing this afternoon in a nonconference battle between two of the state’s top-rated girl’s high school tennis teams. The Panthers are 3-1 and ranked third in the state in Class Three-A, while the Wingers are listed seventh in the latest coaches association poll.

The Minnesota Swarm selected seven players yesterday in the two-thousand-eight National Lacrosse League Entry Draft, including three in the first round. Minnesota selected forward Andrew Watt 8th overall, forward Kevin Buchanan 11th and defenseman Joe Cinosky 13th, named forward Tom Michaelsen in the second round, defenseman Ricky Pages and forward Justin Haworth in the fourth round and goaltender Bruce Bickford in the sixth round. The Swarm had acquired the extra first-round pick, the 8th overall, from Edmonton in exchange for Minnesota’s tenth overall pick and defenseman Andrew Biers.

Jimmie Johnson led 32 of the final 34 laps and held off a late charge by Tony Stewart to capture the checkered flag for the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway yesterday. Johnson's second consecutive victory was his fourth of the season and 37th of his Sprint Cup career. Denny Hamlin came in third, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin rounding out the top-five. Clint Bowyer finished 12th to beat out Kasey Kahne and David Ragan for the 12th and final spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, which begins next Sunday at New Hampshire.
