Mantorville, MN (KROC AM News) - A Stewartville man was arraigned in Dodge County Court Friday on felony assault and other charges for an incident that occurred in Hayfield on Wednesday.

Bail for 37-year-old Larry Wenthold was set at $500,000 and he has been ordered back to court for another hearing May 11th.

Wenthold was being sought by South Dakota authorities for failing to register as a sex offender and local authorities became aware he was in Hayfield.

Several officers were involved in the planned apprehension of Wenthold and his vehicle was found in the Citizens State Bank parking lot. When he was spotted getting into the vehicle, one officer parked behind the car and another pulled in front. Wenthold then rammed both vehicles and was able to start backing out of the lot at a high rate of speed.

Olmsted County Deputy Mark Chambers was also there. He was standing outside his squad car and yelled at Wenthold to stop and then fired his gun. Chambers was struck by the vehicle and knocked to the ground. Wenthold kept going until he crashed into an apartment building and then fled on foot but was caught a short distance away.

Chambers was treated for a minor injury.

Court records show Wenthold has an extensive criminal history with charges including assault, domestic abuse, burglary and violation of no contact orders.

He was also arrested in 2005 for a criminal sexual conduct case. He pleaded guilty to a burglary charge in the case and was sentenced to 68 months in prison and ordered to register as a predatory offender.
