Minnesota Saw 6% Increase in STD’S in 2014
St. Paul, MN (KROC AM News) - Minnesota experienced a six-percent increase in the total number of reportable sexually transmitted diseases last year.
A new report from the State Health Department shows there were just under 25,000 cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis reported in 2014. The total from 2013 was just over 23,000.
Chlamydia remains the most common infectious disease in the state and the number of cases reported in 2014 hit a new record high at nearly 19,900. The majority of the cases involve teenagers and young adults between the ages of 15 and 24.
The report also shows Minnesota experienced a five-percent increase in gonorrhea cases, while the number of syphilis cases rose to nearly 630, which was up 17-percent from the previous year.
