Minnesota is on the northern edge of what is commonly referred to as Tornado Alley.

Tornadoes have occurred in our state as early as March and as late as November.  The most common months for twisters are June, July, and May in that order.

According to the DNR, nearly three-quarters of all tornadoes in Minnesota occur during those months. May (15%), June (37%), and July (25%). The treat for a tornado is highest between 2:00 PM and 9:00 PM. However, tornadoes can happen at any time of the day.

Do you know the difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning?

A watch means tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. You should prepare to act quickly if a warning is issued.

A warning means a tornado has been sighted. You should seek shelter immediately.

The Red Cross offers these tornado tips to keep your family safe:

  • During any storm, listen to local radio stations or news channels to stay informed about tornado watches and warnings.
  • Pick a safe room in your home where household members and pets can gather during a tornado. This should be a basement, storm cellar or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows.
  • Practice periodic tornado drills with your family so that everyone knows what to do if a tornado is approaching.
  • Prepare now for future storms with high winds by removing diseased and damaged limbs from trees.
  • Move or secure lawn furniture, trash cans, hanging plants or anything else that can be picked up by the wind and become a projectile.
