While the CDC says it's not uncommon for states to have such an elevated status considering the time of year, they wouldn't say whether it was related to the new flu strain affecting those who got a flu shot this year. So far, 15 children have died nationwide of influenza. While every death is tragic, it pales in comparison to 2009, when 348 flu-related deaths of children were reported. The flu season typically reaches its peak in December, and some years, won't slow until February. It is also not uncommon for influenza cases to last into May.
