One Direction Accused of Ripping Off Def Leppard With ‘Midnight Memories’
One Direction might be dealing with a legal headache and a battle with some '80s rockers regarding their music soon.
Here's the skinny.
The Mirror reports that rock legends Def Leppard, responsible for generating plenty of hits of the big hair decade, have dispatched their lawyers to investigate alleged sonic similarities between a 1D song and one of their own.
The lawyers are looking at 1D's 'Midnight Memories' title track and Def Leppard's smash, 'Pour Some Sugar on Me,' which lives on 1987's 'Hysteria' and absolutely owned airwaves the following year.
It's true that the 1D song noticeably nods to '80s glam rock, in its chords and vocal arrangements, but in order to establish that it directly copied the Def Lep song, a team of legal and sound experts would be required to review the material extensively.
The song was co-penned by 1D's Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson.
A source said, "Music lawyers will routinely scour hits like this one to see if there is any evidence that a band has either copied or cleverly mimicked a Def Leppard song. These cases can often take weeks to sort out because we are not talking about peanuts here – the 1D album is selling millions and if the title track goes out as a single it will generate even more money."
While Def Leppard's camp is remaining silent right now, it has been noted that the "two songs sound alike" and it has been brought to the attention of lawyers, who will see if they can make a case and get it to the courts.
Also, this would not be a quick cash grab for Def Leppard, as the song was their biggest hit and they've likely made tons of dough from it over the years.
If you are so inclined, you can listen to both songs below. We know that most Directioners were not even in zygote form when 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' was a smash. While the song has an anthemic and similar groove, it doesn't sound like an exact copy to our ears.
Directioners? What say you? Not like we don't already know your reactions. We expect you to leap to the boys' defense.
