Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Rochester police have released the name of the victim of an early morning shooting.

31-year-old Abdullahi Omar Sheikh was unresponsive when a Gold Cross ambulance crew arrived at the corner of 2nd Street and 14th Avenue Southwest near St. Mary’s Hospital in response to a report of a traffic crash at 2:23 a.m.

Police Captain John Sherwin says it was in the St. Mary’s Emergency Room that doctors discovered Sheikh had a gunshot wound to his upper torso and attempted to save his life.

The ambulance crew told police there were two men in the vehicle with the victim. Captain Sherwin says one of the men was taken into custody for questioning, while the other man fled the scene on foot. At last report, the man in custody was not being very cooperative with investigators, who are still working to learn the identity of the person who left the crime scene before officers arrived.

Sherwin says investigators have determined the fatal shooting occurred inside the car and recovered a handgun near the crime scene.
