Winona, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is in charge of the investigation into a police officer involved shooting in Winona.

A preliminary investigation found two Winona Police Officers stopped a motorist for erratic driving on Garvin Height Road around 12:15 a.m. Saturday. At some point during the traffic stop, the officers opened fire and a bullet struck the driver of the vehicle. The motorist sped off with the the officers in pursuit, along with Minnesota State troopers and Winona County Sheriff Department deputies. The pursuit last about 5 miles and ended at the Highway 43 Interchange at I-90 after deputies deployed stop sticks. That led to a standoff that lasted about an hour before the person surrendered and was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment before being booked into the Winona County jail. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension noted that a .45 caliber handgun was found in the front seat of the vehicle. The two Winona Police officers involved in the incident are currently on paid leave.
