Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - An overnight police standoff in Rochester’s Jefferson School neighborhood came to an end Wednesday morning.

Police Capt John Sherwin says officers were called to a residence in the 1100 block of 13 Ave NE around 9:30 p.m.Tuesday and were there all night. The man finally came out and surrendered around 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Sherwin says officers could see a man with a long gun inside a detached garage at the residence during the standoff. He was alone during the entire standoff and was drinking alcohol.

Sherwin says the man did not threaten anyone but made comments about harming himself. It’s believed the standoff began as a domestic incident and at this point, no charges are expected to be filed. The man was taken to St. Marys Hospital for a mental evaluation.

Sherwin says he communicated with the principal of Jefferson School at the scene Wednesday morning and they developed a plan to make sure students were safe during the standoff.

The school district says students were escorted into the building. Students who live nearby and were walking to class were also escorted to the school.
