Hanging a bag filled with this in your backyard is crucial for the summer season!

With summer officially underway in Minnesota, it's also time for another season in the Land of 10,000 Lakes - Bug season!

We've all been there: suffering through days and nights of fighting with flies that constantly annoying us during a family gathering, or neighborhood bar-be-cue while we're trying to eat!

Well enough is enough!  Here's how to get rid of them for good with a few simple household items that you probably already have in your home.

To make this fly preventing bag, first gather the following items: a plastic sandwich bag, lime juice, a few pennies, and some salt.

1) Start off by putting about two and a half cups of water into a bowl.

2) Then, add in the salt and two or three squirts of lime juice.

3) Stir this mixture to blend it all together.  It will look like regular water but when the mix is made, just pour it into the plastic Ziploc bag until it's almost full.

4) Before sealing the bag, the last step is to drop the pennies into the mix.

5) Finally, hang the bag up in the backyard where the sun can hit it.  You can use a paper clip and some string to hang it up from wherever it will stay - and BOOM!  No flies to bother you anymore!

The reason behind the effectiveness of homemade repellents like this is because flies have visual receptors called ommatidia.  The reflective light or flickering light "scares" them because they can't focus.

So give this a try the next time the flies won't stop bugging you at your next social gathering!
