An annual report on homelessness in Minnesota indicates the problem has grown worse despite an improving economy.

The Minnesota Housing Partnership looked at data gathered by four of the state’s largest school districts and found almost 4000 children and youth were identified as homeless during the first few months of the school year. That is up about 100 from a year ago and is the highest it’s been since the organization began tracking the statistic.

The report did find a slight improvement in the average number of homeless families seeking shelter in Hennepin County, the state's most populous county. The partnership says that number dropped from 386 in 2013 to 372 this year.
