It has been nearly two weeks since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico. Many are still without power, running water and food.

Over the weekend, a family owned shop right here in Rochester organized an awesome fundraising event to support the island.

My husband's family is from Puerto Rico, and that was the first big trip we ever took together as a couple. It was an incredible place with amazing people, and right now those people need our help!

Javier and his wife Joy orchestrated a "Puerto Rico Donation Drive" with the help of several area residents. It was held yesterday (Sunday) at Javier's Barbershop in Northeast Rochester. Those that donated items or money received a free haircut.

They got the word out with a Facebook Live video:

I asked Javier how the event went, and he said the support from the community was amazing!

"We received 213 cases of water along with 3 pallets full of supplies, personal hygiene products, diapers, wipes, formula, baby food and more. We raised more than $2,000 dollars in a few hours. The support from the community was unbelievable. We are accepting donations throughout the week as well, with more events to come in the near future. I didn't do anything special, I just followed my heart and did what is right for a devastated community"
