Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A traffic lane on 3rd Ave SE near the Olmsted County Government Center is scheduled to be closed for several weeks beginning Monday.

The city Public Works Dept says workers will be removing sediment from the Zumbro River between the Broadway and 3rd Ave bridges through the end of December.

This will affect motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

The department says the bike trail along the south side of the Zumbro River near the Government Center will be closed during the project. Also, the sidewalk along the eastern side of 3rd Avenue SE will be closed from the Lakewood Square building exit to the bridge.

Trucks will be accessing the construction site along 3rd Avenue SE south of the bridge and on 4th Street SE near the surface parking lot east of 3rd Ave. This will require the closing of the easterly travel lane on 3rd Avenue on the south side of the bridge.

The department says removal of sediment from the flood control channels helps maintain the proper channel capacity to handle flood events.

This will be the fourth time the entire channel has been dredged since the flood control project was completed in 1995.
