Rochester Man’s Unintentional Death Results in Prison Sentence
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The man responsible for a fatal shooting in Rochester last summer has been ordered to spend a little over four years in prison.
31-year-old Abdulkadir Omar Mohamed entered into a plea agreement in December and admitted to a second degree manslaughter charge for the shooting death of 31-year-old Abdullahi Omar Sheikh. In exchange, a second-degree murder charge and another felony count were dismissed.
At his sentencing hearing Wednesday morning, Olmsted County Judge Kathy Wallace handed Mohamed a 58-month prison sentence, with credit for the 190 days he’s already spent in jail.
The criminal complaint against Mohamed says Sheikh was driving a car, and while Mohamed was handling a gun in the back seat of the vehicle, the weapon discharged. The bullet went through the driver seat and struck Sheikh in the upper torso. The deadly incident occurred while the victim was driving on 2nd Street Southwest near St. Mary’s Hospital last August.
The car ended up on the curb against a utility pole, and the incident was initially reported to police as a traffic crash.
