When I first heard about restaurants doing this, my initial thought was the look of the straw. I had no idea that it was so much more! Bravo to Bleu Duck Kitchen for being one of, if not, the first to do this in Rochester.

It's a growing revolution among restaurants and bars across the world as more concerns are raised about the impact plastic straws have on the environment. More than 500 million straws are used in the U.S. every day, and many of them end up in the ocean or landfill. Seeing as they're made of plastic, they're going to stay there for hundreds of years. - National Skip the Straw Day.

Plastic straws may not seem like a huge deal because of how small they are, but National Geographic says "their size makes them one of the most insidious polluters because they entangle marine animals and are consumed by fish."

First Ave joined the anti-straw revolution last month, posting this to their Twitter page:

According to Buzzfeed, "starting in May, McDonald's locations in the UK are making moves to reduce some of their ecological footprint by phasing out plastic straws, and replacing them with biodegradable paper ones."
