Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - It turns out there was more to a shooting near the Mayo Civic Center Friday than what was initially reported.

Police are now trying to determine if the incident involved an exchange of gunfire. Police arrested a Rochester man after the shooting that was reported around 10:30 Friday night near the Center Street Hotel. Police learned a 36 year old man had been shot in the leg while in a car that was leaving the scene of the shooting. Officers learned of the victim when he went to St. Mary’s for treatment.

Officers later found bullet holes in two rooms at the hotel. A window at the First Street Parking Ramp a block away was also hit.

Captain John Sherwin says the incident apparently stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the victim and 35 year old Calvin Dixon over a girlfriend. Dixon lives at the motel and it appears the victim came there with some friends Friday night. Dixon also had some friends with him and investigators are trying to determine who fired shots at the vehicle as it left. They are also trying to determine if shots were fired from the car as it sped off. More than a dozen shell casings were recovered at the scene but so far, officers have not located any guns.

Sherwin says the victim and Dixon have ties to gangs. Dixon was expected to be charged today with making terroristic threats against the shooting victim.
