Rochester’s Apartment Building Boom Continues
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Rochester homebuilders were not all that busy in February, but the building boom involving multi unit housing and commercial projects continued last month.
The City Building Safety Department approved only 15 building permits for new single-family homes, while developers took out permits for the construction of two more apartment buildings with over 200 housing units.
Last year, Rochester set a record by approving multi-family housing projects the contained over 1100 units. During the 1st two months of this year, the Building Safety Department has already approved building permits involving nearly 500 units of multifamily housing.
The city issued a total of 137 building permits valued at over $58 million in February, which boosted the total for the first two months of the year to almost $106 million.
The largest projects approved last month involved the two additional apartment buildings in an area just east of the Shoppes on Main complex with the permits for each building valued at over $13 million. The city also approved an $11.5 million permit for an ongoing expansion project at St. Mary’s Hospital, and an $8 million permit involving alterations at the Mayo Clinic Data Center on West Circle Drive.
