Rochester could have its first real police precinct in the next year or so. The Police Department is seeking funds for a feasibility study that will look into the proposal and the City Council will discuss the request at its committee meeting on Monday.

Police Chief Roger Peterson cites a number of reasons for a possible precinct. Among them: the city’s population and geographic growth, increasing traffic congestion and limited space for expansion at the Law Enforcement Center.

If the Council approves the $24,500 funding request, it’s estimated the study could be completed in two months. If a precinct is recommended, Peterson says he may include the project in his 2015 budget.

Officers have been using space in fire stations for various purposes the last several years. A precinct would give the department much more space and flexibility.
