Back to school, and back to your regular routines! Are you thinking of starting a new workout program? If so, here are the biggest workout myths out there!

I am that person who HATES to run. I have horrible knees and lovely asthma. I can kill a short distance sprint any day, but stick me on a treadmill and I will complain (or sound like I'm dying) the ENTIRE time! For years, I was told cardio is the ONLY way to lose weight. I was struggling finding something that is right for me! I'm an amazon-like tall, broad woman. What works best for me? Disguising my cardio with something fun like kick boxing and combining it with strength training! Starting in October, I'm taking the Farrell's 10 week body shaping challenge. I've heard really great things about Farrell's, so it's time I put it to the test.

WORKOUT MYTHS:

  • Cardio Is the Best Way to Lose Weight!

"Yes, traditional cardio workouts will help create a day-to-day calorie deficit (in addition to a healthy diet), which is essential for losing weight. But in the long-term, since having more lean muscle mass helps your body burn more calories at rest, you’ll be adding to this deficit without doing a thing." This according to MyFitnessPal.

  • Strength Training Will Make You Bulk!

Speaking of strength training! I always thought if I did too much strength training, I would end up looking like Chyna! I'm all for looking strong, but I'm not a professional wrestler, so I don't want to look like one. Fortunately ladies, because we don't have as much testosterone as men, it's pretty hard for us to bulk up from a normal strength training routine, and like previously mentioned, the more lean muscle you have, the more calories you burn.

  • Crunches Are the Best Exercise for Your Abs!

While crunches are certainly not going to hurt your core strength, they are not the most efficient. There are several standing core exercises that will work every inch of your abs.
