Should Rochester High Schools Adopt a Similar Policy?

A Midwest high school is introducing a new controversial requirement for all high school students in order to receive their diploma. What do you think of this?

No plan, no diploma. A requirement for all high school students at a Chicago school, starting in 2020.

According to CNN, “students must provide evidence they have a plan for the future: either acceptance to college or a gap-year program, a trade apprenticeship, military enlistment or a job offer.”

“We need to change how we think about what it means to be a high school graduate. A diploma alone isn’t enough anymore,” said Chief Education Officer Janice Jackson.

The Chicago Board of Education approved the plan, known as “Learn. Plan. Succeed,” in May. With 381,000 students, Chicago Public Schools would become the first large urban district to implement such a requirement, according to city officials.

What do you think? Should Rochester schools do this?

Personally, I think it’s a great plan. Kids should have a plan before heading into the real world. Get them thinking about their future, and actually making moves to make it happen – I don’t see it being a bad thing.
