The three-month period used by the National Weather Service for tracking winter statistics ends Friday, and this winter is already listed among the 10 coldest on record in Rochester. So far, the average temperature is tied with the winter of 1976-77 as the 8th coldest with an average temperature of 9.4-degrees, but the average temperature only needs to slide another four-tenths of a degree for this winter to become the fifth coldest on record. The coldest winter on record was in 1978-79 when the average temperature was only 5.6-degrees. Rochester has now experienced 45 days with sub-zero cold since December 1st, which is the ninth highest. The record is 52 days from the winter of 1977-78. This winter is also ranked 10th on the list of winters with the most days of measurable snowfall at 30.
