Top 5: Things That Sink A Job Interview
Is your New Year's Resolution to get a new or better job? Here are some Don'ts for you.
A new survey from CareerBuilder.com asked hiring managers to name the deadliest sins that can sink a job interview.
Here are the top five:
- 5
Dressing Appropriately
Half of the hiring managers asked by CareerBuilder responded with dressing appropriately. You've heard that old saying, Dress for the job you want, not the job you have. The punchline is usually, "And now I'm sitting in a disciplinary meeting dressed as Batman!" Save the utility belt for the weekend and dress to impress.
- 4
Acting Arrogant or Entitled
60% responded that one faux pas would be to act arrogant or entitled. Your resume should shine, not the tiara you wear to the interview. A positive, confident attitude is important, but an interview is not just a formality. It's a way to get to know you. Confidence needs to be balanced with humility. No one wants to hire someone that everybody else has to "put up with". So, leave the tiara and sash at home, but remember to be all about "world peace".
- 3
Not Making Eye Contact
Maybe you've heard that the eyes are a window to the soul. 67% responded by including eye contact as important to the success or failure of a job interview. Probably not a good idea to turn the interview into an awkward staring contest, but making eye contact is a sign of confidence.
- 2
Answering Your Phone or Texting
Nearly three-fourth of the responses included answering your phone or texting during an interview as a no-no. It's all about focus and attention. More importantly, etiquette and self-control. Save sharing the exciting news about the interview and possible new job for after. It's probably not a good idea to ask for a selfie, either.
- 1
Lying About Something
Honesty is the best policy, especially to any new employer. Nearly seventy percent said that lying could cost you in a job interview. Make a point of complete transparency, or as much as possible. What happened that one summer in band camp should probably stay at band camp.
