Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Rochester City Council has given its blessing to a new ordinance that will lead to the presence of Uber drivers in the city, apparently in the near future.

The council Monday night gave its first reading to the ordinance. It needs to come back for one more reading before it’s official.

The council spent most of this year hearing from Uber and taxicab representatives and discussing the new ordinance.

Monday night’s vote was unanimous.

Council President Staver wants to revisit the ordinance in one year. He and others also want to take a hard look at the existing ordinance that governs the city’s taxicab businesses and some changes may be made to deregulate the industry.
