The survivor of a near fatal shooting in Rochester earlier this year became emotional Monday morning as she officially became a US citizen during a special ceremony at the Olmsted County Government Center.

48-year-old Zahra Zamiri was preparing to take the Oath of Allegiance before she was shot twice in the chest by her ex-husband when he visited her Elton Hills neighborhood home and then took his own life. After an extended hospitalization, the Iranian immigrant only recently recovered enough to participate in the naturalization ceremony, which was attended by Mayor Ardell Brede and members of the Rochester Police and Fire Departments.

Federal Judge Donovan Frank decided to hold the ceremony in Rochester rather than in the Twin Cities where they are normally conducted.
