A website has just recently ranked all the cities and towns here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes and has come up with a definitive list of the Drunkest Places in Minnesota. So which place tops the list? The answer to that question might just surprise you.

According to the folks at RoadSnacks.com, that honor goes to our neighbors to the northeast in beautiful Red Wing, followed by Stillwater, Brainerd, Virginia and Detroit Lakes to round out the top five.

  1. Red Wing
  2. Stillwater
  3. Brainerd
  4. Virginia
  5. Detroit Lakes
  6. Alexandria
  7. Bemidji
  8. Duluth
  9. Minneapolis
  10. Cambridge

Now if you're like me, you might be wondering just how the folks at RoadSnacks determined these rankings. Here's how they did it:

"We threw a lot of criteria at this one in order to get the best, most complete results possible. Using Yelp and Sperling’s Best Places, this is the criteria we used:

  • Number of bars and pubs per capita
  • Number of wineries per capita
  • Number of liquor stores per capita
  • Each city’s drunk related tweets within the last week
  • Each city’s divorce rate
  • For geo-located tweets, we measured the following raw number of tweets that came from within a city’s general area: #Drunk, #Party, #Beer, #Wine and #Cocktails"

Ah, so there IS some science behind it. Although, I'm guessing the drunk-related tweets component is a little less-than-scientific gauge of how much a community likes its alcohol. I'm not surprised that both Red Wing and Stillwater, with their very close proximity to Wisconsin, are on the top of the list.

I am little surprised, however, that St. Paul didn't make the list. There are some great bars in our state capital, like Sweeney's, the Happy Gnome, Barrio, McGovern's or the Liffey, just to name a few. Plus all the politicians, too - because we all know they can knock 'em back, which should have upped St. Paul's 'drunk related tweets' category.

As for Rochester, we finished at 22 on the list...

What do you think? Where would you say is the "Drunkest Place in Minnesota"?
