They saw the 26 year old man apparently racing another vehicle near St. Mary’s around 2:30.  As the driver of the westbound vehicle  was trying to turn onto 11th avenue from 2nd street, he apparently lost control and crashed into a gasoline pump at Virgil’s Auto Clinic.  The man then drove away but was followed by the witnesses who kept in touch with police until he was apprehended. The man was arrested on suspicion of DUI and hit and run.  A spokesman says there was no leak of gasoline from the damaged pump.
