Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A major road project is scheduled to get underway this week in Rochester.

Olmsted County says the reconstruction of 55th Street between Highway 52 and West River lRoad is slated to begin on Wednesday. The $4.2 million project calls for the removal of the blacktop pavement and replacing it with a concrete roadway, curb and gutter, along with storm sewer work.

The work will include the busy intersection with Bandel Road Northwest. Officials say traffic will be maintained, but congestion and significant delays can be expected due to restricted movements and the use of flaggers.

The portion of the project between Bandel Road and 18th Avenue Northwest will be done in two phases beginning August. The last portion of the project, involving the roadway between 18th Avenue and West River Road, will require the closing of 55th Street and a detour.

The entire project is scheduled to be finished by the end of October.
