Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - It’s become apparent Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede will not be ready to select the city’s next Police Chief before long-time Chief Roger Peterson retires on Wednesday. The Mayor’s office has announced Brede has appointed Police Captain John Sherwin to serve as the interim Police Chief until Peterson’s permanent successor is chosen. A swearing-in ceremony for Sherwin will be held at City Hall Wednesday morning.

Mayor Brede has three finalists to choose from as ponders the long-term appointment. Mark Elliot is the Police Chief of Prior Lake, while James Franklin is a captain in the West Command the Division of the Metropolitan Transit Police in Minneapolis. The 3rd finalist is Roy Alston. He holds a Ph.D. and is a Lieutenant with the Dallas Texas Police Department.

All three candidates were in Rochester earlier this month to be interviewed by members of the City Council and field questions from community members. At last check, city officials were working to complete the background checks on each of the finalists.
